1000 years of history and almost as many keys to the world

In the hills between Roannais, Forez and Beaujolais, lies the Domaine de Saint Marcel de Félines. At its centre sits the almost thousand-year-old château. Bathed in light, it draws its tranquil strength from its setting of greenery and forests.

The estate's successive owners have added and embellished the estate over the years to give it the appearance it has today.

The Domaine de Saint Marcel de Félines is a historical site but not a museum. It is a living and open place, fully invested in the present to play its role as a hospitable, memorable and inspiring place. Let us guide you!

Heritage for the 21st century

The first known document about Saint Marcel dates from 1095, when Gaston and Albert de Saint Marcel took an oath. From a modest stronghold in Beaujolais, proudly facing the Forez, it slowly became a château over the centuries. At the end of the 16th century, under the influence of the owner of La Bâtie d'Urfé, Jean de Talaru, who came from an old noble family from Lyon, embellished and transformed Saint Marcel, enriching it with Renaissance features and the walled garden. The 4-hectare garden, adorned with 2 pavilions, has a long terrace from which you can admire the breathtaking view towards the 4 cardinal points: the Forez plain and mountains to the south and west, the Madeleine mountains to the north and the Lyonnais mountains to the east.

In the 17th century, Claude de Talaru decorated several rooms in the château with exceptional painted wood panelling. Saint Marcel continued to evolve from generation to generation, often handed down by women, until 1860. At that time, it was the Piston de Saint Cyr family (from which Mary-Ange Hurstel descends), heirs to an illustrious Empire general of the same name, who acquired Saint Marcel, further enriching its collections. For more than 40 years, its current owners have continued this task with dedication.

The château and all its decoration have been listed since the 1960s.

Resolutely focused on quality, the Domaine is committed to a sustainable approach. Biodynamically farmed plots, environmentally friendly buildings (a recently built barn won the Auvergne Rhône Alpes FIBOIS 2021 award), special attention to restoring wetlands, planting hedges, developing a more varied and local fauna and flora... these are just some of the concrete commitments implemented every day at St Marcel.

Take a timeless break in a micro-world

The Domaine de Saint Marcel is a complete and varied site with a château, outbuildings, a garden, a conservation orchard, a canal, an amphitheatre, an open-air theatre and a chapel. It is a world unto itself, immersing you with all its power in absolute calm and breathtaking views of magnificent landscapes and forests.

To preserve the intimate character of Saint Marcel, the residence of a family who is the fundamental driving force behind the estate, visits are only possible at given periods.

All the year round, Saint Marcel offers many opportunities to return. With its many aspects, it fulfils its vocation of welcoming the public and schools. It also hosts cultural and artistic events (plays, our annual garden show: Vieilles Pierres, Jeunes Plantes) and many other activities for relaxation, fun and inspiration. The Domaine welcomes private events for its one-day residents: weddings, company seminars or training courses.
